Daniel Baker, Age 19
Lance Corporal, 17104, 7th Battalion, King's Shropshire Light Infantry.
Daniel was born in Dawley but had enlisted at Ellesmere Port.
He was killed in Action on the 13th Nov 1916 right at the end ofthe battle of the
Somme during an attack by the 8th Brigade (which the 7th KSLI were part of). The
object of the assault was the village of Serre which had been a target to be captured on
the first day of the Somme (July 1st) and had still not been taken. The KSLI were in
support of the 1st Royal Scottish Fusiliers and during the attack suffered 214
casualties, killed, wounded or missing.
Daniel fell during this assault and his body was never found, he is remembered on the
Thiepval memorial Panels 12A & 12D
